That first session with a brand new Theo Parrish album is a special one. Slipping deep into Theo’s twisted sound world informed by decades of eccentric jazz, leftfield house, rare soul and psych rock, yet completely uncanny and unmistakably Theo from the first note. Always slightly behind the beat but ahead of the curve; no one sounds like this guy, especially with the freedom to spread out over six sides of vinyl. Sipping on “Hambone Cappucino” through the dusty cubism of “Radar Detecter”; flipping through my records looking for something I might be able to mix into it but ultimately resisting the urge and just taking it all in. The side-long deep bruk voyage “This Is For You,” insane drum machine flex “All Your Boys Are Biters,” downbeat maximalism “Knew Better Do Better” and “Hennyweed Buckdance” are other initial highlights. Triple vinyl pressing, limited copies, recommended.
