People have probably been saying “this album sounds like the soundtrack to a coral reef” about Animal Collective records for over a decade, but this one actually sounds like one! The band have been shouting out reefs in interviews for a minute now, and Avey Tare, Deakin and Geologist (no Panda Bear this time, hopefully he’s working on a new solo record) got together and made a record to celebrate the International Year Of The Reef. It’s an audio-visual album, made in collaboration with Coral Morphologic, a musician/marine biologist duo specializing in “avant-garde coral macro-videography.” Visuals have long been a key piece of the AnCo puzzle, and if you’ve been to their shows or spent hours staring at Strawberry Jam or Merriweather Post Pavilion, you know what I’m talking about. Some fans thought Painting With was too austere, but fret not, Tangerine Reef sees the crew settling back into the stoned subaquatic psychedelics that defined the more dazzling moments of Feels, Strawberry Jam, Merriweather and Fall Be Kind.
